Additives to protect polymer performance against heat, oxygen, and ozone degradation
Overview
Rubber and plastic compounds don’t degrade all at once. They degrade gradually through heat buildup during processing, oxygen exposure during service, ozone attack on unsaturated polymer chains, and the cumulative stress of flexing, stretching, and compressing over time. The result is hardening, cracking, surface crazing, loss of tensile strength, and ultimately, premature failure of the finished part.
Antidegradants are the ingredients that slow that process down. Added at relatively low concentrations, they intercept the chemical reactions that drive polymer degradation, protecting the compound both during processing and throughout its service life. In demanding applications like automotive components, industrial seals, conveyor belts, and tire compounds, the right antidegradant system is the difference between a part that meets its design life and one that doesn’t.
6PPD: The Standard for Ozone and Flex-Crack Protection
6PPD is a p-phenylenediamine (PPD) antidegradant and one of the most effective antiozonants available for rubber compounds. It provides outstanding protection against ozone attack, flex cracking, heat aging, and oxidative degradation — particularly in dynamic applications where the rubber is repeatedly deformed during service.
Its effectiveness comes from its ability to migrate to the rubber surface at a controlled rate, forming a protective layer that intercepts ozone before it can attack the polymer backbone. This surface activity makes 6PPD particularly well suited to applications involving constant movement and exposure to outdoor conditions.
Key performance benefits:
- Outstanding antiozonant protection in dynamic and static conditions
- Superior flex cracking resistance
- Effective heat and oxidative aging protection
- Strong synergistic performance when combined with TMQ and other antidegradants
- Works across NR, SBR, NBR, BR, and EPDM systems
DAPD: Long-Term Protection for Extended Service Life
DAPD (mixed diaryl-p-phenylenediamine) is a PPD antidegradant built for persistence. Like 6PPD, it protects against ozone, flex cracking, and oxidative heat aging. The difference is how it delivers that protection over time. DAPD migrates to the rubber surface much more slowly than 6PPD and has low volatility and strong resistance to water extraction. That lets it act as a long-term reservoir inside the compound, continuing to protect the part long after faster-acting antiozonants have been consumed.
That makes DAPD a natural fit for rubber goods designed for decades of service, such as engine and suspension mounts, bridge bearing pads, dock fenders, and heavy-duty conveyor belting. It also offers better processing safety than alkyl-aryl PPDs. That’s why it’s widely used in polychloroprene (CR) compounds, where scorch control is critical. Like all PPDs, DAPD is staining and is recommended for black-filled compounds.
Key performance benefits:
- Long-term protection against ozone, flex cracking, and heat aging
- Slow migration and low volatility for sustained protection over extended service life
- High resistance to water extraction
- Improved scorch safety, especially in CR compounds
- Works as a secondary antiozonant alongside 6PPD for extended protection
- Compatible with NR, SBR, BR, NBR, and CR systems
TMQ: Broad-Spectrum Heat and Oxidation Resistance
TMQ is a quinoline-based antioxidant and one of the most widely used antidegradants in rubber manufacturing. Where 6PPD excels in dynamic ozone and flex fatigue protection, TMQ’s strength is in long-term heat and oxidative aging resistance — making the two products highly complementary in most rubber formulations.
TMQ works as a chain-breaking antioxidant, interrupting the oxidative degradation chain reactions that break down polymer structure over time at elevated temperatures. Its polymer backbone makes it less prone to volatilization and migration than lower-molecular-weight antioxidants, giving it better persistence through high-temperature processing and extended service life.
Key performance benefits:
- Excellent heat aging and thermal oxidation resistance
- Good processing stability during high-temperature mixing and extrusion
- Low volatility for sustained long-term protection
- Cost-effective performance across a broad range of rubber substrates
- Strong synergy with 6PPD in demanding antidegradant systems
Building the Right Protection Package
In practice, 6PPD, TMQ, and DAPD are rarely used in isolation. Each addresses a different part of the degradation problem. 6PPD provides fast-acting protection against ozone and dynamic flex fatigue. TMQ handles heat and oxidative aging. DAPD extends protection over the long term by staying active in the compound after more mobile antidegradants are spent. Together, they provide broader and longer-lasting protection than any one product achieves alone.
