Polymer additives that absorb and disperse energy so rubber and plastic goods resist cracking and shattering
Acrylic Impact Modifiers: Maximum Weatherability
Acrylic impact modifiers are core-shell polymers built around a rubbery acrylic core. Because the core contains no unsaturated bonds, acrylics hold up exceptionally well to UV light, heat, and long-term outdoor exposure. They are the standard choice when a rigid PVC product must keep its impact strength, color, and surface quality for years in the weather.
Common applications:
- Window and door profiles
- Siding, fencing, and decking
- Outdoor rigid PVC extrusions and capstock
Key benefits:
- Excellent long-term UV and weathering resistance
- Strong color retention and surface gloss
- Good impact efficiency and consistent processing
MBS Impact Modifiers: Clarity Plus Toughness
MBS (methacrylate-butadiene-styrene) is a core-shell modifier with a butadiene rubber core. Its refractive index can be closely matched to PVC, so it toughens the material without clouding it. That makes MBS the preferred modifier for clear and transparent rigid applications. The same butadiene core that delivers high impact efficiency is less resistant to UV, so MBS is generally used indoors or in protected applications.
Common applications:
- Clear rigid PVC sheet and film
- Transparent packaging and blister packs
- Bottles and clear injection-molded parts
Key benefits:
- Outstanding impact strength with high transparency
- High impact efficiency at low loadings
- Strong performance in low-temperature handling
CPE Impact Modifiers: Proven Performance in Pipe and Profile
Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE 135A) is a long-established impact modifier for rigid PVC. Its polarity makes it highly compatible with PVC, and its low-crystallinity, chlorinated structure delivers solid impact resistance, cold-temperature performance, and good weatherability. CPE also contributes inherent flame retardancy, which is a useful advantage in building and electrical products.
Common applications:
- PVC pipe and fittings
- Window profiles and siding
- Electrical conduit and cable-related rigid PVC
Key benefits:
- Reliable impact strength across a wide temperature range
- Good weather and chemical resistance
- Natural flame retardancy
- Free-flowing powder that blends easily with PVC resin and stabilizers
